Where is the Firewood this Weekend? The Forest is now closed for the season. We would expect to open again in November. Watch this site for confirmation of the opening date.
The History:Hancocks firewood yard has been situated on the loop road from the front to the back gate of Kinleith mill. It replaced an access by permit policy of CHH that was withdrawn as a result of the actions of a few abusing the privilege. With the change of ownership this yard may no longer be available as a public firewood area for the population of Tokoroa. HOWEVER: The Lions negotiated an alternative with Hancock Forest Management that returned the "good old days" of access into the forest. The idea is the Lions manage the access so that the actions of the few that led to the public losing access in the past do not happen again. We are highly appreciative of the efforts Hancock's have made to enable this offer to be make. It is Tremendous News. It works like this: A designated point of the forest will be open each weekend and Lions will notify the public through this web site and other means such as posters or the news media. The public will be free to follow the designated route to this point during the open hours of 9.00am to 3.00pm. At any other times unauthorised people on those roads will be trespassing and security will deal with them in the normal manner. The scheme began Labour weekend from a site off Smythe Rd. The rules are common sense:
Common sense please! We want to keep this privilege now we have it. Please feel free to make comments on firewood supply to Tokoroa via the email contact page. We are trying to do our very best for you all - and your support is appreciated. Meanwhile keep watching this website for further information.
